Zest's Managing Director Jeffrey Beyer shared insights into the ways in which eight countries in the MENA region can accelerate green and transition finance.
With a $230 billion annual shortfall between today's investments in sustainable projects and the region's needs to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals, he explained that the shortfall needed to be made up mostly by the private sector.
But the private sector needs governments to create the right enabling environment to challenge finance towards sustainable projects. It also requires government support to overcome financial barriers by offering specific financial tools to mobilise finance.
He discussed six enablers and eight financial tools that are available. He shared the top priorities for the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and also described options where regional collaboration would deliver greater benefits.
The event was hosted by the Clean Energy Business Council in conjunction with WETEX and sponsored by the Dubai Water and Electricity Authority.
